TWENTY-THREE HAIKU

1

the cat creeps forward

a shady spot in a hole

beneath the window

2

on top of the snow

a shadow of a flyer:

the cry of the hawk

3

pheasant tracks in mud

the wind blows softly:

winter comes quietly

4

stars drift overhead

nighttime melodies are heard:

a singular time

5

work ticks by, sweat drips
anxiously we all gauge time:
somewhere a clock chimes

6

I master only

the routine act of being:

nothing real special in that

7

the sun goes down fast

and the night plods so lonely:

where are the stars now?

8

it came to my door

quietly, without a sound:

summer brought flowers

9

and where am i now

sitting alone in a cloud

counting tidy thoughts

10

starlight serves us well

we wait for the right lover

ascending the universe

11

more than fact is truth

in going to my mailbox

hoping for a touch

12

a small bird flits by

the grasshopper is quiet:

three seeds hold their breath

 13

trudging drudgery

we are trapped all day long:

the night brings freedom

14

the night owl flutters

there against the mother moon:

the mouse stays hidden

15

a soft rain falls now

we’re overcome by perfume:

sitting listening

16

eyes and smile appear

a hot summer afternoon:

ice melts in soft air

17

sparks from my chimney

the glowing presumptions soar:

the stars are silent

18

a rain falls to earth

deer mice tracks on the wet trail:

the owl floats above

    19

a trillion signals

shoot through my head each hour:

hear the rooster crow

20

breaking dawn at last:

the cold sunlight makes no sound

in the morning air

21

sitting above me

the cats eyes sing luridly:

a bird flits away

22

adjusting the seat

there's something in the sky there:

the bum holds his sign

23

before the daybreak

the dog star follows me home:

footprints on the frost
